Westminster Cathedral

If you are in London for the first time, don't mix up Westminster Cathedral with Westminster Abbey. The Abbey is Church of England and houses most of the dead kings and queens. The Abbey is on the top of everyone's list to visit. It costs some pounds to visit and no pictures are allowed. I recommend visiting this awesome historic place.

On this trip, since we had already seen the Abbey, we were intrigued by a brick and white striped tower. It reminded us of some of the towers we had seen in Italy. This place is Westminster Cathedral. It is Catholic. It is free to visit and photographs are allowed. For a small fee one can ride an elevator to the top of the tower and look out across the urban London landscape. If you have some free time, this is an interesting place to visit.

The cathedral was started in the late 19th century. The mosaic art is spectacular. The upper parts of the cathedral remain bare. When the building was finished, parts of the interior were not decorated allowing future generations to contribute to the religious art.

In a busy part of the world, this place offers a bit of calm and introspection.
