Restaurant Wine Pricing

Anything Wine links to a great article about restaurant wine pricing. If you ever order wine in a restaurant, it's a must read.

It is frustrating to pay so much for a wine mark up in a restaurant that you can find in any wine store. I don't mind paying extra if the wine is unique and hard to find. Most of the time a bottle is not stored correctly and ruined when it is served or it is not served at the right temperature(ever try drinking 80 degree Chambolle Musigny? Asking for an ice bucket, the wine was out of balanced and cooked, lost all high tones and still the price was over $100!) Enotecca Sogna is great with their mark ups. Some of the wines they carry are the same price as retail in NY. Now I drink the special wines at home with the wife at our dinner table. When we eat out we just order something simple as a quaffer. If we are celebrating and want to splurge we make sure to patronize a respectable establishment with a solid wine program.

wine pricing in hotels are very high at times. but I don't mind paying a little money for really good wines once in while.
